Breaking The Surface is a summer workshop that promotes interaction and the exchange of knowledge and experiences in the field of maritime robotics and its applications. Over the course of seven days, participants will gain firsthand knowledge of the latest scientific research and findings, technological advancements, as well as practical experience working with complex and modern underwater systems.

The programme consists of:

  • Lectures where latest scientific research and results are presented
  • Field demonstrations which showcase the latest technology achievements made by research groups and companies
  • Tutorials which offer hands-on experience working with complex and modern underwater systems
  • Company presentations with insight from company professionals about their company and company products

This year, as part of the Breaking the Surface workshop, an Underwater Localization Challenge will be held.

Underwater localization is crucial for exploration, relying on acoustic systems due to the attenuation of radio waves in water. In this year’s challenge, participants will use a 1-way acoustic direction-finding system with three hydrophones to locate a submerged beacon, gathering georeferenced recordings and analyzing acoustic data to estimate its position. Teams will compete on speed, accuracy, and innovation, with experts supporting them throughout the process.
